Thank you to all who sent encouraging words after my burned out blog post. I have been taking some time away to give my own body some rest. It’s hard when you feel like you are going it alone. Your contacts and comments showed me that there are still people who are interested in learning and striving for better health. So with that I’m taking a different direction and I’m going to talk about the adrenals since that is what I struggled through in my “burn out” phase. When supplementing with iodine, adrenals can rear their ugly heads and reveal an underlying issue. Ensuring their health is a key element in your success. Taxed adrenals can cause you to think that there are other issues that really are not issues at all.
So let’s start with what the adrenals are. They are two glands that are the size of a walnut, at approximately 4 grams, that sit on the top of each kidney. If you reach your hands backwards behind your back so that your elbows are bend your knuckles will reside over the top of these glands. You can press into your skin with your knuckles and moves them horizontally back and forth when feeling stressed or tired. This will help to stimulate them.
What do these magical glands do? A lot! There are two major parts to the gland. The adrenal medulla is the inner layer and the adrenal cortex is the outer layer. The adrenal medulla is the central 20% of the gland. It excretes the hormones epinephrine and norepinephrine in response to the reaction of the sympathetic nervous system. The adrenal cortex secretes completely different hormones called corticosteriods. In addition to these hormones, sex hormones are also secreted.
There are two types of corticosteroids. The first is the mineralocorticoids which gained its name because they affect the electrolytes (minerals) within the extracellular fluids – specifically sodium and potassium. The glucocorticoids are the second type of corticosteroid. It also gained its name due to the important effects that it has in increasing blood glucose concentration. They have additional effects on protein, fat and carbohydrate metabolism. More than 30 steroids have been isolated within the adrenal cortex. Two of these 30 are of exceptional importance: aldosterone – the principal mineralcorticoid and cortisol – the principal glucocorticoid.
When the adrenals are stressed we see several symptoms. Other than fatigue we often experience an imbalance of the sex hormones. If you look at the chart below you can see the process of hormone creation. Is there something that jumps out at you when you look at this chart? What hits me first is where Cholesterol is positioned. Right at the top! What is one of the top drugs being prescribed today ……..
Statins! Statins block the creation of cholesterol. Do you see the tragic results not having cholesterol can have. Perhaps the individual needs more hormones that would be created further down the “chain”. But doctors don’t check those values. Cholesterol is viewed as the bad guy.
The body depends on cortisol to allow for thyroid hormones to work. Adequate levels of both thyroid and cortisol create the proper combination to allow for gene expression. When cortisol levels are low due to adrenal exhaustion, thyroid hormones are less than effective in increasing metabolic rate and energy. This can be a reason why adding thyroid hormones alone through medications can be less than effective in solving the many symptoms of hypothyroidism.
So what can we do to help heal and support our adrenal glands? Diets low in simple carbohydrates and sugars can help to decrease stress. Unrefined salt that is high in minerals supports the adrenals. Vitamin C is also very good for the adrenal glands. They are the largest storage site of Vitamin C in the body. In areas such as Alaska where fruits and vegetables are in short supply during certain times of the year, the Eskimos ate the adrenal glands of the animals to obtain their much needed vitamin C.
I am writing this blog for a reason. I am excited to announce that I have partnered with a long time friend and supplement manufacturer to bring to you high quality solutions for your health needs. I have worked together with her formulators to create products to my specification to match products that I used when fighting thyroid cancer. One of these products is the Buffered C which contains Vitamin C, Magnesium, Calcium, and Potassium. It has a very pleasant lemon flavor added. The perfect balance to support your adrenals, detoxing from iodine supplementing and overall health.
The other product that I am really excited about is a product called Adaptogen Complex. This is a proprietary complex of herbs. I have personally been using this product since June and have found it to be the most effective adrenal support product I have ever tried. I have experienced almost immediate relief of symptoms after taking it. How many products can you say that you feel a change?
You will not find these products on Amazon or other discount sites. This is because we are committed to ensuring that each person gets the support they deserve when using these products. You can be assured that what you are getting are the highest quality ingredients. Supplements found on Amazon are often cheap knock offs of the name brands. This is why you find them at a deeply discounted price compared to what a practitioner offers. Please be careful! Remember what grandma said “If it seems too good to be true it probably is.” Sadly Amazon will not police these counterfeits so it is up to you to ensure you know your seller. Quality matters when you are looking to heal safely and effectively. I hope you try these products and report back with your experience. I know you will be as thrilled as I am.
