Benefits of Boron

I am often asked about the benefits of supplementing with boron.  I decided that it was time for a blog on this topic.    Boron is often associated with a laundry booster – Borax.

Believe it or not there are many who ingest Borax as a way to obtain boron.  But is it safe?  The box states that the contents are “99.5% Borax, also known as “sodium tetraborate” or “sodium tetraborate decahydrate”, and 0.5% “naturally occurring trace minerals”.   I’ll share a link to a toxicology site where there is some scientific research for you to review.  I’m not going to tell you what to do but I will tell you that I would not consume this product.  The main reason?  It’s not a nutritional supplement.  Nutritional supplements are maintained in tightly controlled environments free of pests, toxins and and other contaminants.  They are tested to be fit for human consumption.  Borax will not be.  It’s not controlled by any GMP or NSF standards, as good quality supplements are.  You just don’t know what you are are ingesting.  So what do you do?

Well, there is an option.  The same maker of LugoTabs which contains Lugol’s formula iodine in a tablet also makes BoroTabs which is boron.  Available in 30 mg / 90 tablet bottles or 75 mg / 60  or  75 mg / 120 tablet (**NEW**) bottles.  You can read the pdf document from Hakala Labs with their brief description and research resources.

So what other potential benefits does supplementing with boron have?

  1.  Bones – Boron is needed by the bones to assist in calcium absorption which will help them to avoid becoming porous and weak.  Boron can also help the body to use Vitamin D more efficiently which will also strengthen the bones.
  2. Muscles – Boron will assist in building proper muscle mass by promoting healthy testosterone levels.
  3. Hormone Balance – Boron can assist in helping the body to balance both estrogen and testosterone.  It may even increase fertility.  For some it may reduce PMS and menopausal symptoms.
  4. Magnesium Absorption – Boron has been shown to increase magnesium absorption in the body which would also be beneficial to the bones.  Magnesium is important for the iodine protocol as well as for moods, muscles and over 300 enzyme reactions in the body.
  5. Reduces Inflammation – Boron has been scientifically shown to reduce inflammation markers such as CRP.
  6. Brain Activation – Boron increases brain electrical activity.
  7. Prostate Health –  A boron deficiency has been shown to be correlated with an increased risk of prostate cancer.
  8. Fluoride – Boron may be effective in the elimination of fluoride form the bones and tissues of the body.
  9. Blood Sugar – Boron has shown promise in assisting the pancreas in regulating blood sugar and triglyceride levels.
  10. Arthritis – Since Boron can assist in getting calcium into the body it will help to maintain healthy cartilage levels which will be protective of the joints.

Boron is a seldom discussed, but important, nutrient in our body.  If you are struggling with any of the above issues a trial of this mineral may be in order.

The Iodine Protocol – Common Questions

On my Iodine group on Facebook I am asked the same questions over and over.  These are not included in the Guide to Supplementing .  This is a more casual response to the questions.

How much do I start with?
Answer:   The average amount consumed by the Japanese culture is 13 mgs / day.  However in the current 1st world countries we are exposed to so many chemicals that you may need more.   How much?  No one can tell you this.  It is something that you must evaluate based on learning about the protocol and evaluating your own exposures and health condition.

Is the Patch Test accurate?
Answer:  No – please read this document by Dr Abraham.

Is this detox?
Answer:  There are many things that can be related to detox.  Skin issues, hot flashes, nasal drainage, dizziness, foggy brain, aching joints,  fatigue, ……there are too many to mention here.  What do you do if you suspect a detox reaction?  Salt loading protocol is first (see the guide) and if that does not help them try stopping your supplementing for a few days.  If the symptoms subside then you may have a detox issue.  If this is the case then concentrate on clearing detox pathways through detox baths,  and liver / kidney support.  There are many options for cleanses and it’s always a good idea to cleanse before trying to push out more toxins or you may overload your system.  For some – pulse dosing (5 days on and 2 days off) can help.

Supplementing is not eliminating xyz health condition – why?
Answer:  Iodine is not a magic bullet.  It is a very important element but you have to eat well, clean up toxins, get plenty of rest, address adrenal fatigue, balance hormones, ensure the thyroid gland is optimum, balance nutrient levels, address heavy metal toxicity (if any), clean up mouth issues like amalgam fillings or root canals, and address other illnesses like lyme, food allergies/sensitivities, etc.  Your body is a symphony.  It needs it all to be in balance to work efficiently.  It takes a lot of time and deliberate work on the individuals part to heal.  You didn’t get sick in a week or two and you won’t heal that quickly either.

Iodine gives me energy but keeps me awake
Answer:  Do not take iodine after 1 pm at the latest or it may keep you up.  It may also stress your adrenals and this can cause insomnia.  This is why addressing adrenal fatigue along with iodine supplementing can be critical.

Does Iodine kill good gut flora?
Answer:  We have seen no evidence that this is an issue.  Many of us on the iodine group have taken amounts higher than 100 mgs / day and have not had any issues with gut flora.  If we had an imbalance we would see yeast overgrowth but iodine assists the body in keeping bad bacteria under control.

When I take Iodine I go Hyper…..
Answer:  This is probably the most frustrating comment to me.  It is often spurred on by how someone FEELS not what lab tests for thyroid levels reveal.  In order to identify a true hyperthyroid status you would need to test for TSH, Free T3 and Free T4 and possibly RT3.  Without these, how you “feel” is not definitive.  Symptoms they describe are:  anxiety, jittery, heart palpitations, racing heart rate, insomnia and headaches.   These are also adrenal stress symptoms.  If you can increase your salt, vitamin C and magnesium and the symptoms are relieved then you probably are not experiencing a hyperthyroid condition.    I have found that the Buffered C Powder available through Wellavate and warn salt water eliminated my similar symptoms when addressing my own adrenal fatigue.

Can I take Vitamin C and Iodine together?
Answer:  What you will often see in defense of separation,  is an image in a beaker of brownish iodine water then vitamin C is added and the water turns clear.  Yes this occurs.  However your stomach is not  vitamin C water.  People have been consuming the two together for years without issue.  Sometimes we get paralyzed by analysis paralysis.  Our food is supposed to have iodine and it will more than likely also include Vitamin C.   If you are are concerned – then separate them by an hour or so.   But trying to manage timing often results in not getting your nutrients in for the day.  What I do is take my iodine first, eat and then add my vitamin C last.  That gives a buffer zone.  What I can say personally is that when I used iodine and the buffered C powder and was trying to heal from thyroid cancer I just took it.  I never thought about when or how.  I beat thyroid cancer doing it this way.  I’m not stressing over a beaker of clear water.  I just take my iodine and let my body sort it out.

I hope this information helps to clear up the ever increasing muddy waters.  Common sense is still valuable when thinking about what is happening.  Don’t panic.  Iodine is not the dangerous element that so many are trying to make you believe.  It’s been life giving for me and thousands of others.
